Small decorated box - 100 days

 

I bought this small box from The Works, it was only a couple of quid and I liked the oval shape.  It's still available, at a sale price of £1.50 at time of writing.

For such a small item, it caused me a lot of grief!  I chose to paint it using a Rustoleum chalk finish furniture paint, in a gorgeous ink blue.  Lovely colour, and I have good experience of the brand .... but .... this stuff marks like crazy!!  It needs a protective coat of varnish even on an item which won't be handled much, so if I were to use it on furniture that would be at least three coats required.  But the colours in the range are lovely, so I will be buying more and now I know I will need varnish too :-)

I found the name plate in a box of  'things which will be useful at some point' and applied some gilding polish to make it gold to match the fittings.  That was as far as I got in my planning, the rest was ad-libbed from there!  I have some dark blue veined mosaic tiles so they went inside the name plate, on a bed of gold texture paste because I don't have any grout.  The name plate looked a bit lonely so I added some Venetian marbled paper in shades of blue to sit underneath the plate.  Then the sides looked plain, so I die-cut borders out of the same paper.

Still not enough!  I added gold peel off lines to frame the borders, then decided the top mat needed an edge so found some pearl strips and added some of those to the base as well.

Phew!  It's done ...... Now I have to work out what to use it for :-)

Day 36: Decorated box - completed!

This took longer than expected - the varnish kept raising the woodgrain and I had to keep sanding back and applying another coat.  Eventually it was done and I added the nailheads and cogs/gears over the top.

The papers are from Stamperia, the nailheads and the cogs/gears from stash.  very pleased with this - now all I have to decide is what to putin it!

Day 27: Box in progress

One of my aims for the 100 day project is to complete UFO's and use items bought but never used.  This is both - I bought the box a fair while ago, dug it out after we moved at the end of last year .... and then stalled on it, after I had painted and crackle glazed it.  I was stuck for what to put on top, but then found these great papers from Stamperia.

So it has turned from a UFO to a WIP!  It needs another couple of varnish coats and some further embellishment, but I have a plan now :-)

I haven't blogged for a while.  But then I found the 100 day project challenge on Instagram and decided to join in, starting today April 7th.  So to celebrate a new start, a new blog!



Today's project is a decorated small wooden box, originally bought from The Works before last Christmas.  It's been on the go for a few weeks, but I intend to use the 100 days to finish stuff off!

I removed the hinges and clasp, primed the box with white acrylic primer, then over-painted with bronze shimmer as I wanted this colour to be the 'cracks' under the top coat.  I use Paperartsy crackle glaze, which goes over the base coat but under the top coat, different brands vary as to when they are applied.  Then I applied a top coat of Decoart buttermilk and the crackles appeared as if by magic! A satin varnish went over the the whole box and then I added the metal trim - cut using a Tattered Lace pearl border die - and a brass ornament from stash.
Putting the hinges back on was a bit of fun and games, the screws are so tiny and very fiddly!
I am very guilty of buying stuff and putting away without using it ... then rediscovering it months later!  So this 100 day challenge will give me an opportunity to rectify that with Out of the Drawer projects and to stash bust at the same time :-)
